Description
Wiyabi is Assiniboine for, “Women”. This project was created in response to the overwhelming and frightening statistics of violence towards Native American Women.

*1 out of 3 Native women will be raped and 3 out of 4 will be physically assaulted.

*88 percent of the violence is perpetrated by non-Native men, and Tribal courts have zero authority to prosecute them.

*The murder rates is 10 times the national average.

*Native women are more likely than any race/ethnicity per capita in the U.S. to be victims of violence.

*Native women are more likely to be stalked than any other group of women.

*Between 2005-2009, U.S. attorneys declined to prosecute 50% of all Indian country matters referred to them, 67% of which involved sexual abuse and related matters.

In addition to promoting awareness to the pandemic of interpersonal violence, the Save Wiyabi Project highlights legislation that is beneficial to reservations and empowers Native women.

The Re-authorization of the Violence Against Women Act and the SAVE Native Women Act are two pieces of legislation that would greatly aid reservations and Native women who are victims of sexual and domestic violence. Please contact your Senators and encourage them to support both.

Rikagaku Industry

Do you remember the old school days where you would hit a chalkboard eraser on the board and “Pouff!” out comes a cloud of white dust? This new chalk addresses that problem with its natural calcium carbonate composition made from scallop shells. The particles are heavier, creating less dust. In addition, the calcium carbonate lasts twice as long as chalk plaster, making them more economical. JetPens finds dust still gets on your fingers when using this chalk, but is not as airborne as standard chalk. We are dedicated to providing our teacher customers with healthier, more fun writing alternatives!

The manufacturer of this product, Japan Rikagaku Industry, was established in 1937 on the belief that every human being needs to “be loved, be useful, be praised and be needed”. The company chose to manufacture chalk made from calcium carbonate because there was an indication that teachers who used chalk had a higher probability of tuberculosis than others. In 1953, the resulting dustless chalk was the only one approved by the Educational Ministry of Japan. In their two factories, Rikagaku employs people often overlooked by society. In the Kawasaki factory, there are 48 employees in total: 22 severe mentally-disabled people and 9 mildly mentally disabled people. In the Misaki factory, there are 28 employees in total: 13 severe mentally-disabled people and 9 mildly mentally disabled people. The company has a model blend of environmental and people friendly management policies.

THE RAPE OF THE SAMBURU WOMEN

For more than fifty years, England has maintained military training facilities in the Samburu region of its former colony, Kenya.

During this period, women in the area have faced an epidemic of rape. Women from the Samburu, Massai, Rendile and Turkana indigenous communities have filed more than 600 official rape claims against British soldiers.

Yet, despite documentation of their claims, a three-year internal investigation by the Royal Military Police (RMP) cleared all soldiers of wrongdoing.Meanwhile, the victims have been shamed and outcast in their communities, many to the point of exile.

In the mid-1990s, Beatrice Chili responded to this situation by establishing the village of Senchen, a self-sufficient community run entirely by women. There, women build homes, weave textiles, gather and grow food, and raise children. This short film visits the brave women of Senchen, who speak candidly about their suffering and talk passionately about their demands for justice.

Watch the film to hear their stories and to find out how you can offer your support.

“I think love is the felt experience of connection to another being. An economist says ‘more for you is less for me.’ But the lover knows that more of you is more for me too. If you love somebody their happiness is your happiness. Their pain is your pain. Your sense of self expands to include other beings.

That’s love, love is the expansion of the self to include the other. And that’s a different kind of revolution. There’s no one to fight. There’s no evil to fight. There’s no other in this revolution.”
